Fearing
and Lusty in Lunenburg
Day Three - Sunday
Lunenburg

Sunday
- a busy day ahead and not much sleep to fuel it on. Repeated
thanks to George for taking the driving duties last night.
First up - "Dem's the Blues" with Stephen, Chris Whiteley,
Ian James, Caitlin Hanford, Dan Whiteley, Scott MacMillan and
Jesse Whiteley. As good as everybody was, young Jesse knocked
the rest off the stage with his rendition of an old Buddy Guy
tune. Chris (his father) told me that that was the first time
that he had taken the lead on stage. Chris and Caitlin are justifiably
proud of their offspring (Dan, Jenny and Jesse) - all excellent
musicians.
Stephen's "mini me" (his words for a 25 minute show)
performance on the Grand Banker Wharf went well although I have
to admit that I got a little distracted by a sail equipped canoe
out in the bay. When the sailor made it into land I waylaid him
for a bit. 'Rick' was kind enough to let me get a bunch of photos
for reference as I'd like to do the same thing to one of my canoes.

I
stood on the floating portion of the wharf and took this picture
of Rick's rig...

...and
then I spun around and took this shot for my wife.

Stephen's
final event of the festival was dubbed 'Crazy as a Loon' with
Haines and Leighton, Chris Whiteley, Connie Kaldor, Larry Cohen.
Stephen really wanted a photo of Connie with her new Manzer Cowpoke,
here it is... |

Apologies
to Connie Kaldor and all of the rest that sweated it out on stage
Sunday night but, for me, the highlight of the evening was the meal
that Lisa and George prepared for us. Scallops and salmon, veggies
from their garden, great wine, great company.
We had to cut dinner festivities a bit short as Stephen had agreed
to play a tune with Scott during the final Main Stage show. Scott
called SF up on stage and they launched into one of the tunes that
they had jammed the night before. Lemme tell ya', the place went
friggin' apeshit after they finished. SF came off the stage covered
in sweat sporting a huge shit eatin' grin - I'm not sure if his
feet were touching the ground.
Connie (ably assisted by her husband and sister-in-law) put on a
great show to close out the festival. It's been a couple of decades
since I last was Connie perform and I was impressed with her stage
presence and command of the audience.
What did I learn from this festival? If you're hanging around with
one of the performers you don't get to see very many other people
play, especially when 'your performer' is in great demand and is
always running late for the next event. Compounding this was the
inevitable need to satisfy two sets of coffee cravings, the backstage/between
set chats with other attendees (thanks Jennyfer for keeping me entertained!)
and, of course, the lure of the dive shop with all of those neat
toys to look at.
We retired to George and Lisa's at a reasonable hour and messed
with scuba gear. SF has a nickname - 'Stephen Gearing' - because
of his addiction to fiddling with guitar pickups, his guitar rack
and all things associated with making an amplified guitar sound
good. Why, there's even a gear section on this site! I am guilty of this obsession as well, flat
water paddling, camping, white water paddling, snowboarding - these
are all 'gear' sports and I have a section of my garage that I call
the 'sports store' to prove it. Nothing compares to the gear involved
in scuba - so much to buy, so much to fiddle with. Here for the
first time in public is the deal SF and I have - 'The first one
of us to strike it rich has to buy the other a scuba dry suit (and,
presumably, one for himself)'. So, get out there and buy lots of
copies of Stephen's CDs. Some day, should you happen to spot a couple
of divers in matching pink dry suits, you'll know that there was
a sale on somewhere and that one of us is rich. |
