Red Lights In The Rain

© Stephen Fearing 2016 (Victoria, BC)

It’s alchemy in motion on the highway
Those headlights making diamonds out of rain
And the feeling that you don’t know where you’re going
When you know for sure exactly where you’ve been

Oh we held onto the dream, the four-leaf clover
Everybody’s going to set the world on fire
But that little voice that whispers when it’s over
Ah you can’t escape yourself when it comes down to the wire

Nothing says I’m hungry like a baby
No one says I’m lonely like a train
We never said goodbye
We never even tried
Nothing says I’m gone
Like red lights in the rain

And it seems like my whole life has been in motion
I learned to pack a suitcase as a child
And I’m always drawn to sit beside the ocean
With the water and the wind and the tide

But I’m weary of living like a sailor
Drifting with the current in my veins
A man gets to feeling like a failure
When he’s looking for a place to drop the anchor once again

Nothing says I’m hungry like a baby
No one says I’m lonely like a train
We never said goodbye
We never even tried
Nothing says I’m gone
Like red lights in the rain
