The Big East/West

A line of crosses in a path
The wire highway of the telegraph
On a sea of prairie snow
Like a picture of long ago
And I was writing on the wheel
I was thinking on the past
Looking out across the fields
Watching people turn to photographs
And every sailor knows the truth
Of the anchor and the chain
You’ve got to hold them close to you
If you don’t want to drift away again
Every gypsy knows the way
Like the buttons on his vest
And the sun lies down before you
Out on the big east/west
In a silo up ahead
The golden promise of the sun
Grind it up into your daily bread
Bring it home to your loved ones
But once in every now and then
When you get back from the wars
You turn around and you’re gone again
To that wide open shore
And every sailor knows the truth
Of the anchor and the chain
You’ve got to hold them close to you
If you don’t want to drift away again
Every gypsy knows the way
Like the buttons on his vest
And the sun lies down before you
Out on the big east/west
No Dress Rehearsal
(Stephen Fearing 2007 – Copyright Mummy Dust Music/Fearing and Loathing Music)
Wake
Out of a dream
To the howl of the wind rising
Better take the dog with me
See
What do you see?
Count the ways the world looks different
And somebody said…
Time doesn’t know reversal
Life ain’t no dress rehearsal
Courage makes it own rewards
Try and act accordingly
Life is the motivator
Time will be over later
Waste your breath on wait and see
I tried
And what did I find?
That the hands behind the curtain of The Mighty Oz
Were mine
Walk
Won’t you walk with me?
To the place where we can talk about it
Wouldn’t you agree?
Time doesn’t know reversal
Life ain’t no dress rehearsal
Courage makes it own rewards
Try and act accordingly
Life is the motivator
Time will be over later
Waste your breath on wait and see
“Life ain’t no dress rehearsal”
– Mark Twain
